Legacy JRH recovery guide
Home Safety After Joint Replacement
Home safety is not a small detail. The first days after joint replacement are easier when the floor is clear, the bathroom is ready, medications are organized, pets are planned for, and the caregiver knows what help is actually needed.

Patient education
Useful guidance before the visit, clearer decisions during the visit.
01
Clear the walking path
Remove loose rugs, cords, clutter, unstable furniture, and narrow pathways. Make sure lighting is strong enough for night bathroom trips.
02
Set up bathroom and sleep areas
Patients may need a raised toilet seat, shower chair, non-slip mats, grab support, reachable supplies, and a sleep setup that does not require unsafe climbing or twisting.
03
Plan for pets, stairs, and help
Pets, stairs, laundry, meal prep, medication timing, ice, and transportation should be planned before surgery day.
04
What I want patients to do before surgery day
Set up the home, organize medications, choose the person who will help you, remove fall hazards, and write down the questions that make you nervous. Preparation lowers stress for the patient and the family.
05
When to call instead of waiting
Call for concerning wound changes, fever, chest symptoms, calf pain, sudden severe pain, worsening swelling, confusion, medication problems, or anything that feels unsafe. It is better to ask early than to sit at home worried.
Related patient trust
Recovery is easier when patients know what is next.
The recovery pathway should make home preparation, medication timing, wound checks, therapy, warning signs, and activity milestones easier for patients and families.
