Warning Signs After Joint Replacement
Most recovery symptoms are manageable, but patients and caregivers should know what is normal, what deserves a phone call, and what should go straight to emergency care. Nobody should have to guess when something feels wrong.

Patient education
Useful guidance before the visit, clearer decisions during the visit.
01
What can be normal
Swelling, warmth, bruising, tightness, disrupted sleep, clicking sensations, and day-to-day comfort changes can occur during recovery.
02
Call the office
Increasing redness, warmth, drainage, fever, sudden worsening pain after improvement, new weakness, or concerning wound changes should be reported.
03
Go to emergency care
Chest pain, shortness of breath, severe one-sided leg swelling, fainting, major falls, or dangerous symptoms need emergency evaluation.
04
What I want patients to do before surgery day
Set up the home, organize medications, choose the person who will help you, remove fall hazards, and write down the questions that make you nervous. Preparation lowers stress for the patient and the family.
05
When to call instead of waiting
Call for concerning wound changes, fever, chest symptoms, calf pain, sudden severe pain, worsening swelling, confusion, medication problems, or anything that feels unsafe. It is better to ask early than to sit at home worried.
