Legacy JRH recovery guide
First Year After Hip Replacement
The first year after hip replacement is a progression, not a single recovery date. Early walking, wound healing, swelling, sleep, strength, balance, and confidence all improve at different speeds.

Patient education
Useful guidance before the visit, clearer decisions during the visit.
01
First days: safety and motion
Early goals include safe walking, pain control, wound care, preventing falls, understanding medications, and knowing when to call.
02
First months: stamina and confidence
Patients usually increase walking, daily activity, therapy exercises, and comfort with stairs, cars, sleep, and household tasks over time.
03
First year: return to life
Golf, yoga, hiking, travel, and heavier activity should be reintroduced based on healing, strength, balance, surgeon guidance, and personal goals.
04
How I make hip guides practical
Hip guides are most helpful when they lead to specific questions: where the pain starts, what motion is lost, whether the X-ray matches the story, and what home support exists if surgery becomes the right path.
05
What changes the recommendation
The plan changes when the hip joint is clearly the source of pain, when arthritis or avascular necrosis is advanced, when injections are no longer useful, or when another source such as the spine explains the symptoms better.
Related patient trust
Hip patients usually want a straight answer.
They want to know where the pain is coming from, whether the hip is bad enough for surgery, what approach fits, and what recovery will look like at home.
