Yoga After Hip Replacement
Hip replacement should not automatically end yoga, but it does change how patients should think about deep stretches, twisting, extreme hip positions, and early recovery. The safe plan depends on the surgical approach, healing, strength, and surgeon guidance.

Patient education
Useful guidance before the visit, clearer decisions during the visit.
01
Respect the healing hip
Deep flexion, twisting, extreme rotation, and extension can stress the hip depending on approach and timing. Patients should ask what movements apply to their surgery.
02
Use supported standing poses
Mountain pose, supported half forward fold, modified tree pose, and gentle warrior variations can emphasize posture, balance, and strength without forcing the joint.
03
Make yoga a recovery tool
Breathing, alignment, balance, and mindful control can help patients rebuild confidence, but pain or apprehension should lead to modification.
04
How I make hip guides practical
Hip guides are most helpful when they lead to specific questions: where the pain starts, what motion is lost, whether the X-ray matches the story, and what home support exists if surgery becomes the right path.
05
What changes the recommendation
The plan changes when the hip joint is clearly the source of pain, when arthritis or avascular necrosis is advanced, when injections are no longer useful, or when another source such as the spine explains the symptoms better.
Related patient trust
Hip patients usually want a straight answer.
They want to know where the pain is coming from, whether the hip is bad enough for surgery, what approach fits, and what recovery will look like at home.
